Sam Fox's First Bar Concept, Pushing Daisies, Opens on November 17

Along the hustle, bustle and bumping beats of Upper Broadway is an alluring entryway – one that beckons passersby to descend beneath Nashville’s most famed street for a taste of one of the most celebrated libations in history – the margarita.

And, mind you, this is no ordinary margarita. Come Nov. 17, Pushing Daisies, the first-ever bar-only concept by hospitality innovator Sam Fox, will be peddling an expertly devised menu of unique, one-of-a-kind riffs on the famed margarita, plus agave-based cocktails, large-format shareable drinks, nearly 100 tequilas and a small comida menu of perfectly curated drinking snacks.

Legend has it, Marjorie King, famous Ziegfeld showgirl, wandered into Danny Herrera’s bar in Rosarito Beach in Baja California, Mexico in either 1947 or 1948 and explained her fondness for tequila, but she had trouble drinking it straight. Herrera started experimenting and she approved of his concoction: three-parts tequila, two-parts orange liqueur and one-part fresh lime. Boom, the margarita was born.

“No one has ever had a bad time while drinking a margarita,” says founder, Sam Fox. “We’re hoping to bring a new reason for locals and tourists alike to come celebrate the everyday and raise a glass with old friends and new.”

Pushing Daisies, “daisy” coming from the English translation of the word margarita, honors that fateful recipe and the rambunctious revelry that typically ensues after one, two, or hey, even three (no judgment here) rounds. Alongside Fox, Director of Beverage, Aubrey Mansene, has embraced two philosophies when creating the menu – classic and innovative.

“Pushing Daisies is where people from all over come together with one thing in common – their love for tequila,” says Mansene. “With this menu, our bar team has sought new and innovative ways to put unique twists on classics while having our house-made, fresh ingredients shine through. We’ve got something for everyone and hope to guide our guests out of their comfort zone to try something new.”

Guests can expect to be in awe of the most impressive list of agave aperitifs they have ever seen. Soon-to-be stars include Mucho Matcha ($17) with 400 canejos mezcal, matcha, yuzu sour, egg white and bamboo leaf; El Carajillo ($16) with gran centenario añejo, licor 43, cold brew, madagascar vanilla banana and horchata creme; ¡Vamanos! ($16) served up or frozen with reposado tequila, borghetti espresso liqueur, spanish vanilla, cinnamon spiced cold brew (or as we like to call it, the best-ever espresso martini); Devil’s VICE ($15) with jalapeno-soaked blanco tequila, smashed strawberry, clementine, blistered shishito, finishing salt; and of course – Classic ($14), served on the rocks or frozen, with Corazón blanco tequila, agave and salted lime. It’s the best you’ve ever had (promise).

A GNO on Upper Broadway won’t be complete without a Barrio Punch ($150), a shared punch bowl where the classic margarita meets boozy sparkling Mexican street punch. An eclectic selection of shots also adorns the menu, making for the quintessential way to start a night of tequila-drinking off right. Those in the mood for an exclusive experience like no other can partake in VIP Table Service, and the underground margarita bar can also be booked for private or semi-private events.

Pushing Daisies will be a place for those seeking an interesting and engaging night out. Located at Fifth + Broadway, and directly underneath Fox’s epic The Twelve Thirty Club and Blanco Cocina + Cantina, guests of Pushing Daisies will transcend the staircase down to an elusive underground hallway, each step more immersive than the next. Upon entering, they will immediately feel as if they have been transported to the basement of an old Spanish casa in the heart of Mexico City. Designed in collaboration with renowned architecture firm Smith Hanes, no detail was spared with the creation of Pushing Daisies. The glowing bar radiates warm light and will command attention as bartenders craft perfectly balanced and refined margaritas.

Opposite the bar sits the stage that will feature custom stage lighting crafted from found objects. Friends will enjoy their margaritas alongside the latest DJ sets in seating butted up directly to the stage. The “daisy” debuts throughout the space, from intricate floral patterns adorning the walls and seating to the daisy-patterned penny tile floor encircling the bar. Plush and pillowy elevated banquettes, leather channeled walls and heavy curtains made of plum-colored velvet will create an intimate space, comfortable and familiar. It’s an unexpected escape from the traditional experience of Broadway where the ambience will invite guests to toast and stay awhile.

Pushing Daisies will start slinging margaritas Thursday, Nov. 17 and will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. until late night.
